Production Tutorials

So apart from asking tips from friends and peers who know about music production and reading the manual I got with Ableton live, there is a whole range of production tips and techniques available online from many various places, most notably the Ableton website, where a great range of user tutorials both video and written are available (videos here), as well as tips and tricks from artists themselves. In fact, there is a whole community available to discuss techniques and get tips off other users worldwide. This is something I need to start tapping up a bit more, as discussions with people who are using the program can only help and give me new ideas. There is also a section on Ableton live training, both online and institution. I have been seriously debating going off and doing an intensive production course when I leave uni, and have been looking at a range that are available, but this will need to be considered carefully depending on my situation when I leave. The good thing is I can start whenever as they are shorter courses so start on a monthly basis, but I have also not ruled out the possibility of an online course. I am also considering getting keyboard lessons purely so i can learn about chords and note structure a little more in depth.

Youtube and other video sites are also great resources to tap into, as they have many tutorials from multiple producers and genres, pretty much anything you would want is available. A few good ones to check out are Dubspot, Sonic Academy and Primeloops. There are blogs you can access that pool together bits of video in categories for you, which is handy when you don’t want to trawl through endless videos on Youtube. I have also bought a handy hints magazine all about Ableton Live by MusicTech Focus, which has interviews with artists who use Ableton as well as 67 pages of Ableton Live workshops.
